low testosterone at an early age?

hi i just turned 17 about 2 months ago. a couple of weeks ago i went to the doc to get my test level checked out of curiosity. i just went back for the results and it said my level is at 350. i was kind of turned off by hearing that number. i mean i just turned 18 and follow a fairly strict diet and have worked out religiously for almost 2 years now. my doc said i`m fine and the normal range for people my age is 250-800..but that still puts me on the low end. i guess i`m just curious to hear y`alls opinion. should it be higher for someone my age?

also i think its worth mentioning i have been feeling pretty "down" on myself and maybe even mildly depressed all junior year, which is about just about over. i dont know if its related but thought i`d throw it out there. i do work extremely hard in the gym though

I'm not sure what else you're looking for here. You're within normal range; don't worry about it.

Only do something about it if it's affecting your life or your gains. If you're doing fine without it then don't worry. But low test can have some pretty harsh side effects so if it's really bothering you I'd advise seeing an endocrinologist, urologist, or something of that nature.

Totally agree! Also, lower body fat % will reduce the amount of testosterone the body produces. And like ironwill2008 said, you're in the normal range. Don't worry about it. I'd actually be more worried about having a testosterone level in the higher range. Keep in mind that you're bound to bounce up and down in testosterone levels at your age as well.

My Serum level is at 347 which is low for my age. Trying to get on some TRT to get it around 900 constant.

Median test levels for you age should be around 700

I have always wondered about getting it checked. Good topic OP. Maybe you should go back and talk with your doctor some more.

whats the unit of measurement behind it OP? If it's ng/dl , then ya that is very low. I just got mined tested the other day and I'm at 268 ng/dl. Doctor said normal range for my age was 600-900. Doc wants to prescribe me testosterone, but I'm not sure that she has diagnosed my problem correctly, so I'm holding off. It was the first thing she offered, whereas I feel like that should be a last ditch effort type stuff for someone my age.

If the problem is diagnosed incorrectly, then that could have serious consequences. TRT is for life, and if possible, I'd like to NOT have to do that at 20 yrs of age.

She said she wants to inject me every 2 weeks, which is contrary to most people who say it should be done every week.

She never told me what the cause of my low test was, just prescribed test

I'm show NO symptoms of low test but for some reason my blood work says I am way under average

These things make me a little skeptical.

btw, I don't mean to hijack your thread OP, just hoping that some of my concerns will help you with some of your own you may have

Actually I'm really glad you decided to post man. Cus it it seems like were in really similar situations. Yes I'm pretty sure it was ng/dl by the way. What I noticed though is you said you don't really have low t symptoMs which is kind of what's going on with me. I've been a little down on myself this year, but that's at least partly due to some sh**ty situations that have gone on. It's deff a concern for me though, as working out is a huge part of my everyday life. I guess what really catches my interest is if I'm OK and In fact do have a test level of 350, where I could be not only in terms of gains but also just the everyday quality of life at my age if I had test levels more optimal for my age. I'm kinda curious on how you handle your situation also bro, let me know what you end up doing

did you get free test checked? this is more important than total test. most guys with high free test have lower total test and make gains just fine from what i've seen. how much sleep do you get? less than 7 hours a night for an extended period of time will easily drop your numbers.

everyone's body is different how it functions, that is why there is such a large variance in the acceptable amount of testosterone to be in the normal range.. so your 350 for your body could be the same as 700 for another persons body...

yes, but op mentioned his diet had plenty of fat, and most testosterone tests are done in the morning, unless your doctor is an idiot.

    More so that the person having their blood taken is the idiot. Have you seen all the "low test" threads around? Half of them have either;
    A) had the test done at midday or later
    B) had only ONE test done

Why? It all depends on what company did the blood tests.

    Example of reference ranges..

    Quest Diagnostics
    Males 18-69

    total testosterone 250-1100 (ng/dL)

    bioavailable 110-575 (ng/dL)

She never told me what the cause of my low test was, just prescribed test

I'm show NO symptoms of low test but for some reason my blood work says I am way under average

These things make me a little skeptical.

btw, I don't mean to hijack your thread OP, just hoping that some of my concerns will help you with some of your own you may have
If you don't feel symptoms, then DON'T DO TRT. The treatment process for it is pretty awful and inconsistent, extremely expensive (especially if uninsured), and will likely be replaced before too long. I'm not sure what your doctor is thinking, but myself and others from my family have started TRT and all of us have found it to be a waste of both money and possibly test production.

Yeah and 99% of people fall into that range (strong range). Anything below 250 and your life is going to be hell. In addition, it's not as if the OP is asymptomatic: he's feeling down; of course, that could be situational, but if he had higher test, he'd be better at coping. Furthermore, I do agree that the OP does need to do more tests (full hormone panel, another test. test to be sure (done first thing in the morning)...), but it's pretty safe to say that he does need to get his test up. Now, the OP is 17, so he's still going through puberty, and may develop later, but still...

In any case, though, I recommend that you start bulking, up your saturated fat intake (nuts and fish...you may be getting too many polys, which are very prone to oxidation and influence your test levels negatively if taken in excess; polys are important, but don't be afraid of some butter or red meat), eat a wide variety of foods (fruits, veggies, grains, meat, eggs, dairy...), and try to track your micronutrient intake. You may be missing on vitamin D (very important for test), magnesium, calcium, vitamin K2, ...Track your nutrition at fitday.com or nutritiondata.self.com and report your results here (or just tell us what you eat during the day).

    Good luck
