    Form Check Threads: DOs and DON'Ts

    Form Check threads are great for getting feedback from others and finding ways to perfect your form, continue to progress on your lifts, and avoid injury. Here are some tips for making a good form check thread.

    DO
    • Take video from far enough away to see your entire body.
    • Take video from roughly knee or hip height - this is especially important on squats to determine depth
    • Use a weight at or close to a 5RM. This will be heavy enough to see form start to break down, but also enough reps to determine if the form is consistent.
    • Take video from multiple camera angles for different sets. Best is a 45° angle, one from the side, and one from the front/back. It's impossible to see everything that is going on from one angle, so use multiple angles if possible.
    • Split different kinds of lifts into separate vids, rather than stringing squats + deads + rows + ?, into one long one. (Thanks mrmrbill!)
    • Use a tripod or some sort of stand (box, bench, chair, whatever is available). A shaky camera is harder to watch.
    • If there is something in particular you are worried about or focusing on, try to call attention to it, and make sure the area of concern is clearly visible in your video.
    • Get a YouTube account and use it to host your video. YouTube accounts are free. Use the youtube tags to embed your video. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO HAVE 30 POSTS TO EMBED A YOUTUBE VIDEO, ANYONE CAN DO IT. Open your video in YouTube and highlight everything after the "v=", if there is an "&feature=related" or something similar, stop at the & sign like this:



      Then paste it in your thread surrounded by youtube tags like this:



      And your video should be embedded in your thread.

    DON'T
    • Post a video that requires viewers to tilt their head to watch it. Even YouTube has an editor you can use to rotate your video, Windows Movie Maker is free and easy to use as well - there is no excuse for this.
    • Include excessive prep time. No one wants to watch you walk away from the camera, put on your belt, put on your straps, slap yourself in the face to get psyched up, or anything else you might need to do before you begin your lift - edit that stuff out. The more information you can get to people in the shortest amount of time the better. Ultimately this will result in more, better quality responses for you.
    • Mute your video. Sound is important and it is often very helpful to hear your breathing during a lift.
    • Post your video without watching it first. This should go without saying.
    • Get defensive. You are posting a video to get critiqued, don't take offense to the comments that people make - they are taking the time to try and help you out. Either accept the fact that you are going to get some constructive criticism, or don't bother making the thread.

    These sorts of things are what make form threads either really good, or really bad. The quality of the feedback received is almost always better when most of these tips are followed.
