why are plate load machines popular

I don't get it. what is better about plate load than selectable 'nautilus-style' machines?

Not being dependant on a pully system to raise the weights allows many machines to operate in a less uni-directional fashion than their Nautilus-esque counterparts. As such, a more natural range of motion can be achieved.

That will be five dollars please.

For the most part plate load machines such as hammer strength have one pivot point and are set up to work against gravity. Selectable machines like a lot of the lifestyle ones you see in a gym or any machine with pulleys decrease weight. More pulleys equals less effort you need to move the same amount of weight.

I would also like to point out that Hammer Strength in particular seems particularly well designed to "force" good form on some exercises, such as chest press.

Not for people my height. No machines are designed for good form when you have a 7 foot wingspan. That's one of the main reasons why I stay away from machines.

In addition to good points above, plate loaded machines mimic the variable resistance that free weights give throughout the motion of the arc against gravity.

Cable machines usually provide the same resistance throughout the movement.

It's not really that one is "better" than the other, more like they provide "different" resistance curves, and it's good to do both in their own way.

The only one we use is the shoulder press machine, but I like it a lot, especially for my son. Much more balanced for an exercise like that than a barbell would be.

Not sure I understand your exact question, but the "better" choice is the equipment/exercise that works the target muscle in a way that you feel does the best job for you.

As far as the muscle is concerned, resistance is resistance; how that resistance is applied in the most efficient way is up to the trainee to decide for him/herself.

Doesn't really matter what the method is, as long as it produces the desired results.

This may be the answer. And not just purchase price but ongoing operation and maintenance costs. Pulleys and cables seem more prone to failure IMO than the simpler and seemingly more rugged designs of most plate-loaded machines.

I guess I've gotten real lazy lately and don't always gravitate towards the plate loaded machines anymore especially since I joined a new gym that has plate loaded AND pin selectable machines BOTH made by Hammer Strength. They both are very similar in their motions, etc. so for me the choice is easy.... put in a pin. Done.
