Going back to a plant based diet?

Im going to the doctor today because for the last year ( since Ive been in the military) Ive bee having some digestive issues, i.e. not as regular as I was before joining. Now, before I joined all I ate was fruits, vegetables, beans, limited fat free cheese as far as dairy, and the occassional seafood. I was regular, like clock work even. Then all through basic training I would eat what was available except anything with meat, this included eggs. By the end of basic I was up 10-15lbs,and irregular. I moved on to AIT, again a controlled eatting environment where I stopped eatting eggs, but my veggies and fruit were VERY limited, and on the weekends I ate out every meal. Lo' and behold by the end of that time I was up over nine months 20lbs heavier and irregular.

In January, I started working on getting my body back right, and I am seeing GREAT progress. I am eating fat free dairy, eggs, and seafood everyday. I cannot use the bathroom. CAN NOT. Yesterday I took 3 ex lax. Nothing. Today I took 2. I had a BM but it wasnt productive. Im going today to ask for test to make sure there is no underlying problems like a thyroid issue as I have other symptoms like sleeplessness, severe mid day fatigue. Ive been adding fiber, drinking buckets of water. Since this has gotten worse I feel like maybe my body doesnt like high protein diets, and that perhaps I run best off of a plant based diet though if I do switch back I plan to keep my calories at 1700 which is going to mean ALOT of eatting. ALOT. It would a high carb (from veggies/fruit/beans) diet.If I had to guess would say 60c/20p/20f. Fats from oils and nuts. I just cant help but feel like all of the things are happening to me that books Ive read that advocate a vegetarian/vegan lifestyle said would happen. That scares me. I just feel like I was at optimal performance back then and all thats changed is adding eggs, whey ( which I actually plan to keep, hope its not the issue) and eattng a SH*T ton of protein. If calories in v/s calories out then it shouldnt matter. There are vegan bbers, why cant I be a vegetarian? Do I have to have such high protein intake? What results can I expect from having a high carb low protein diet. I mean, I think I look better now but I also attribute that to lifting weights because I NEVER touched a weight, ever. If I did it was REALLLY REALLY light so I think that attributes to it. I mean really. If calories in v.s calories out are all that really matter and macros have to do with hormone levels and satitey not composition, and I dont have a thyroid (or other condition) there are no reasons to believe I cant achieve my body with plants, beans, whey, ff dairy, fruit and the occassional fish. I just cant take this irregularity, bubbly, bloated gut, tired, run down feeling anymore. Like I said, its gotten worse exponentially since I started high protein.

Bleh. Thanks for listening. I think I need Emma Oh and I will tell you what the dr says.. and being its a military hospital they will probably prescibe me ibupropen, and tell me to drink water. Thats the solution for EVERYTHING! I have a fever.. drink water, my back hurts.. drink water.... my dog died... drink water.. haha You think Im kidding. But Im so serious lol.

I'm right there with ya - had the same problem when i started taking in more protein. Can't give advice on a plant-based diet (would be interested in that myself thought), but have to share that Activia has completely and utterly changed my life. I'm not bloated and am completely regular again. I buy the vanilla light flavor, sometimes even add a half scoop of whey for protein if I need it, otherwise is good with fruit or LF granola. Says on the package that can take 2 weeks for results, but for me was maybe 4 days tops, and let's just say the results were impressive. I had tried a probiotic acidophilus but didn't get anywhere near the relief I got with Activia, for whatever reason.

I wonder what it has that regular yogurt doesnt? I'll try it out..

I cant just up and go see a GI. I have to be referred which is what happened. They are also testing my thyroid, kidneys, and liver. Get this she referred me also to the nutritionist so that she could tell me how to eat for my blood type. Really? No. I dont buy into that certain blood types need X nutrition. I read a book that has studies in it that show that the two arent related at all. But whatever. I also get to get an colonoscopy. Ugh. Not looking forward to that. All I know if nothing is wrong with me its 100% my diet.

It's very rare for that to happen, I wouldn't be too worried about it. The more diagnostic test you have to figure this out the better. Trust me I can relate though, I had to have one when I was 24.

It wasn't the most pleasant thing and I was gassy for a couple of days. The worst part for me was the Fleet Phosphosoda, man did it clean me out; stay near a bathroom at all times. Apparently they used an anesthetic that was similar to truth serum so the conversations after waking up were pretty funny.

Sometimes adding things into your diet that your normally haven't had (ie: vegetarians that decide to eat meat) can plug you up quite a bit. A friend of mine is a vegetarian and she told me that if she even has soup made with a meat based broth it will plug her up

But you are doing the right thing by seeing the Dr. The colonosocpoy won't be too bad. My mom had two of them done. One was many years ago and she didn't have such a great time, but the last one that they did on her, they sedated her and she doesn't remember a darned thing from it. They use a sedative that is referred to as "conscious sedation" i believe (the same thing they give you when you have your wisdom teeth out). Your technically awake but you aren't really consciously aware of what is going on and you won't remember anything.

The worst part is all the laxatives they give you the night before. It will clean you out good! I believe that you need to take it until you start pooping clear liquid. Stay close to the bathroom.

It is important to get to the bottom of things, especially when it comes to your digestive system. Please let us know what goes on!

Do you think you may have gluten intolerance?
Your symptoms of fatigue, sleeplessness and constipation could be related to this......
I have complete control over my body. What I eat and what I do reflect that. Nobody can stop my progress. I will continue my progress until my goals are met. Then from there I will need to achieve new goals to keep the forward progression of my mind, body, and soul. I motivate myself every day to work out, eat healthy, and live my life to the fullest.

No because I dont really eat anything with gluten and when I was "regular" I ate a boat load of gluten type products ie "fake meats" and alot of grains. I very rarely eat grains anymore, been getting 80% of carbs from veggies/fruit/beans and the rest incidentals. Im cutting down my protein by 100g ( I was taking in like 220-230g) and see what happens.

I do better on a higher fat diet. Feel better and look better in my opinion. I didn't feel great on an entirely plant-based diet though and missed the animal products a lot. My sister has been eating an entirely plant-based diet for about 3 years (vegan) and her body is very, very thin and toned. She probably gets 60% of her calories from fat (nut milks, raw nuts, avocados, olive oil). I don't think you can put on a lot of mass eating that way but you can certainly get thin!! I know she's dealt with the constipation thing though - probably because she eats hardly any grains except quinoa.

Yeah no.. Im not going vegan again. Its stressful enough with the whole accounting for everything I eat, planning, and working out on top of my already busy life that I just dont care enough about it to put forth the effort. However... Im not going to do the seriously high protein anymore, I just cant obviously. Im stll going to stick with minimal use of ff dairy. Im keeping my shakes because they really keep me sane, and since I get up at 4am and I am working out by 420am I dont have time to eat and digest a meal, and Im addicted to myofusion :O) So today is the day where I am turning things around to see if it helps and this is what I have planned/have had thus far

Pre WO - Shake w. soy milk

Breakfast - protein pancakes with 23g protein reduced from 36g

Snack - 111g (random but thats all I had) raw strawberries + 52g apple

Lunch - 2.2 serving of black beans with ff sour cream and ff cheddar

Dinner - 1/4c quinoa dry, 58g avocado, 2oz crab meat, 4 servings of steamed broccoli

Bed time - mock ice cream w. peanut butter

    Calories : 1701

    p: 145g or 33.16%
    c: 174g or 39.7 %
    f: 53g or 27.06%

My goal is to evenly divide up everything for right now. Today Im just eatting what I have on hand because I go grocery shopping tomorrow. Im going to sit down and rethink recipes because I was eatting 5-6 servings of fish a day. But I think I did pretty good for just winging it today. I mean Im not getting 1g protein per lb, but I am getting more than 1g per lb of LBM So I figure as long as I am getting 120g of protein I should be just fine. At least I hope, I really hope that lowering protein rectifies this situation

Going to start eatting a giant bowl of oats in the morning, alternating with the pancakes because I use egg in them reduced it from 4 to 2. I should give them up all together but I love those damn pancakes!

Doesn't seem like you're eating enough. Are you sure your calorie counts are right?? Looks like you're getting lots of fiber though...and I think your macro split looks good.

Which is exactly my point FitnessFreak I know that as long as I get good whole food then it doesnt matter whether my protein comes from plants or animal. Only thing that troubles me is I dont want to eat alot of processed things like temph, seitian, soy, you know the fake stuff. I mean yeah Im going to do it occassionally, but I dont want it to be an everyday thing . Thats why Im going to keep fish in the picture intermittently as well. But not 5-6 servings a day. Also, I think CHEESE is the problem. Whey I have no problem with. Every time I eat something with cheese my stomach blows up gets all bubbly and it HURTS. So NO. MORE. CHEESE! Should have known better. I havent eatten cheese in years until recently. Fack!
