Just weigh them on a digital scale. I think when I weighed ones previously they were 1.2 lbs per collar? Or total? Hmm... Now I can't remember

Zero. Especially if you are using a 20kg bar. In other words, dont ever worry about what they weigh. Unless they weigh more than 2.5 lbs a piece the weight doesnt count.

    Mostly this ^^^

I never count collars of any kind of any weight. They do at a meet but they already have that calulated in the weight that you put down for your attempts. Also, All bars 7ft or longer of any style all weigh 45lbs.

Forget fractional plates. The smallest plates you should worry about are 2.5lbs plates. I know some people frown on the chips (2.5lbs plates) and just work with the 5lbs plates. You're training and 1-3lbs increments on a barbell should not be worried about.

you're not allowed to put chips on the bar at Wild Iron unless you're going for a record....and records aren't made in the gym, they're made in competition.

we do allow dimes and nickels for PRs however.

You're not going to be able to ad 5 pounds a week to your MP every week. If you stall, just do 3x3 as heavy as you can go for 2 or 3 weeks then throw some "chips" or nickles on there and keep going. I find that 5x5 will only get you so far on MP, then you really start to stall. Just lower the reps and keep going. Also make sure you're hitting your Tri's hard and you'll see your number go up.

The only thing chips and 5s are good for is rolling one end of a deadlift on to change plates if you don't have a bar jack.

You people frowning upon the smaller weights. Every little bit is necessary, if my routine says 337x4x3 I'm going to put on 335 then put on 2 sets of collars.

Just out of curiosity (not intending to be a smart ass, really interested in your opinion)...

You list your best squat as 550. 80% would be 440.

If you were blindfolded and lifted 440 and 445 without knowing which was which, do think you would notice one was heavier?

Light plates are easy when working with a percentage based routine. Or a routine that requires you to raise with 2.5kg or something like that.

I thought i once read/heard somewhere that the nervous system doesn't respond differently to weight increases lower than 5lbs.

I think fractional plates are important, especially for beginners using linear progression modules like Starting Strength. Stop being such hardasses.

To all you guys putting fractional plates and "chips" down, remember that for people starting with lighter weights, those smaller weights are a larger percentage of their max than they are for you. If you were to give somebody a 5 pound bar to curl and then you put two 2.5 pound plates on each side, you've doubled the weight. At weights of 100+ pounds, it's not going to make an enormous difference, but the heavier it gets, the less noticeable it is.

Also, there are some programs that require people to use specific percentages of a 1RM or some other number to determine what will be lifted for a particular exercise. Tomorrow, my squat session for the Madcow 5 x 5 is looking like 112, 140, 168, 196, 230, and 168 again. I'd like to get those exact numbers because I would like to follow the program exactly and fractional plates/chips/collars all help.

I agree with this. I have always wondered what would happen if we were somehow blindfolded and the weights were just put on the bar. I do think alot if it is mental. of course there woukd be a breaking point.

Sorry but I really do not believe in fractional plates for training. Chips sure when necessary and I'll use them when going for a PR at times, but worring about 1-3 pounds increaments with fractional plates is a bit much. As for programs that deal with percentages you can round around it and being 1-3 pounds off is really not much percentage wise.

Unless you bench like 30 pounds
I use a lot of percentage based routines usually i just round it down to the nearest natural number so sometimes i do need those smaller weights (though i think the smallest one i use is 1.25kg or 2.75lbs/side).

About the blindfolded/feeling thingy ... You wont feel it, hell i miss loaded the bar with over 20lbs once and somewhere at the end of the set i thought man this is harder than it should be but i didn't feel it was too heavy.
Or the ultimate plateau breaker ... get someone to load his max and tell him to get you something to drink and when he's gone load something extra on it (works best if you work with small plates) chances are very high that if he doesn't notice it he'll lift it and won't know that he just hit a pr. Friend of mine once tripled 11lbs over his max because he forgot to unload the bar after my set. He didn't realize he was lifting too much until the set was done.
