    Pectoral muscle injury

    Maybe a month ago, I was doing heavy incline bench presses. To my recollection didn't do the reps wrong, on my 3rd set during one rep I felt a pain....I was still able to finish my set, but the pain was lingering, almost kind of a painful burning I guess, between my shoulder and chest.

    I took a couple weeks off and went back to the gym this past week and did my bench presses, once i hit a heavier set, started to feel the pain again. Wasn't feeling anything during the day, only when I did my heavy reps.

    Tried researching, and looks like I may just have a strain, probably not a tear. Anybody have this injury before and treat it? I have no medical right now so I can't see a doctor, any rehab tips? What should i and should I not do at the gym?

    Thanks anyone for your help

    Oh and currently, if I pull my arm backwards as if I'm doing a bench press I feel pain in that area.

    Probably just a strain, like you said. Could be in the pec major or minor, hard to tell but a "deep" pain is more likely to be the minor.

    Either way, rest, ice and stretch until you can pull your arm backwards without pain. Lifting on it while it's damaged will slow or stop any healing, so go easy. 4 weeks off the gym might seem terrible, but a full tear could mean months off.

    The key is to listen to your muscles. If they hurt, stop and rest. When you go back, go light and take it a step at a time.

    Thanks...you think I should avoid all upper body movements? I mean like going light for back, bis, tris...avoiding shoulders and chest of course

    Basically don't do anything that hurts. If you have damaged that muscle and you're using it, you're not letting it heal. Back, bis and tris should be OK.

    pectoral pain

    After doing a set of heavy dumbell presses my upper chest started to hurt. I think that since the seat was at a slight decline that I was involving my upper pecs to much.{that was as straight as I could sit the seat up). I tryed to do some shrugs after and it hurt worst, By that night I could hardly breath. Now when I twist my head or twist my upper body to the side it pops in the middle of my upper chest,like something is lose in the center. and today it hurts all the way down into my armpit and there is a bump in the center of my chest just below my collerbone that hurts to the touch. There is no brusing or swelling, there is just alot of pain and it worst when I move my right arm. Should I go to a docter? do you think they could do anything? what can I do to try and heal my chest?

    ouch, a bump in your chest. Well when a muscle is torn it usually will retract and cause a bump like that, however if you just strained it or maybe tore it a little but didn't detach it the muscle would also swell up like that.

    Here are some indicators of torn pectoral muscle
    * Pain, very severe pain in the chest area
    * Swelling
    * Bruising
    * Loss of a vertical lifting power
    * Loss of horizontal mobility

    This is a picture of a torn pectoral tendon

    If it really is torn as in detached completely; then it will require surgery.

    If you really are worried about it and it hurts bad though, just go to the doctor.

    Pec pain

    The bump is in the upper middle of my chest at the bone. It does not feel or look like the muscle has bunched up in the middle of my chest. The bump almost feels like the bone in my chest is now raised a little bit. but the pain in my chest goes from that point to my armpit. I think I might just go to the doc just to be safe. Should I do anything utill then? Heat or ice or streching?

    rest, ice, compression and a pain killer like aspirin or ibuprofen beyone that you can't do too much else. Make sure to stay on top of your nutrition in the mean time. I wouldn't try stretching it until the worst of the pain has subsided.

    Did you ever find out what was wrong? I can see this is an old thread but I came across it in my search for my pain. Your symptoms are exactly like mine.

    strain or tear in the pec muscle

    I was benching on my second rep of 315 and on my way down the muscle started to rip and pop hard to explain not a good sound I was forced to push the weight back up to the safety bars and I went home immediately and iced it the muscle when my arm is down looks normal just swollen but no bruising on the chest when I lift my arm above my head I have a lump that appears on the outer side of my pec the only bruising I have is in my upper bicep but my bicep or should does not hurt the only sore spot is where the lump is when I raise my arm as for the rest of the chest its fine no indents or deformities im curious to what this is and if rest and ice will heal it or if surgery is necessary

    sounds like a partial tear, surgery is usually for complete raptures or big ones. That said you will probably have to rehab the muscle properly and remember that your likelyhood for further tears will now be increased so you will have to be more mindful of everything you do
