    Very inspirational walk-on story

Well, I know most people in the sports section are either out of HS and trying to walk on a college team or still in HS trying to get a starting spot.... Earlier I was watching a show about this dude that only played a year of football in the 5th grade, but went out for USC football team and actually made the team.

dudes name is Ben Malcomson and he was actually a writer for the schools paper and wrote a couple journals about his walk on expirence...

His story of making the team:

    http://www.dailytrojan.com/media/pap...ailytrojan.com

How the tryout went for him

    http://media.www.dailytrojan.com/med...epublisher.com

Its crazy because he was 6'0, 170 and went out for the team as a senior... and he actually dislocated his shoulder during summer workouts and was able to come back with two games left in the season, he ended up only playing one down in his career... But **** i can't even fathom being on the sidelines in a USC uniform at the colosseum!

I left the crate on my stoop and went in to get something and I returned to see the sanitation man put the crate into the crusher. I rushed him and caught him flush on the temple with a titanic right hand he was out cold, convulsing on the floor like an infantile retard." -Mike Tyson

Yeah... I'm gonna say he was just naturally gifted because he's not that big at all... they showed some vids of him playing at spring practice and he made some pretty good catches and was fast off the line of scrimage too...

    New to me.

Great read, I've often wondered about what it would have been like to try something like that.

Nice story. You'd be surprised at how some big names in the NFL had relatively humble beginnings as football players. Not neccessearily being a walk on at the college level, but still perhaps not what you'd expect to hear about players who ranged from being very good, to legends.

Jerry Rice is said to have not played football until his sophore year of high school. Did well enough to make it to a college team, although he wasn't yet viewed as a potential NFL player or anything by that time. Then the dude went in the middle of round 1 in his draft class, then proceeded to tear up the NFL like a guy who one would have thought should have been a #1 overall type guy.

Or how about unfrafted free agent rookies with humble beginnings who did well? Adam Thielen went to a D2 college in Minnesota before joining the Minnesota Vikings as an unfrafted rookie free agent. After a couple of years of paying his dues/earning his shot to be in the starting lineup, he turned into a very well respected WR in the league.

He's not a legend like Rice of course, but he's the type of guy who might be remembered very well and make his team's ring of honor sometime down the line. Also, one hell of a feel-good story being that the guy turned into a high caliber starter for his hometown pro team that he essentially joined as a walk on.
