As most of you know, the new job has been a struggle. Recently, however, one of my coworkers admitted that I had been set up to fail, and that I had stayed around to tough it out when many others would have quit. I am starting to see a light at the edge of my reports. What I have learned is this: some of these kids have no one encouraging them. Simply telling them that I believe in them makes a visible difference. It is not a cliche; encourage someone today. Tell someone they are smart, or caring, or that you know they can do something. You have no idea what your words can do.
