Sticky Thread Sticky: The Bench Form Thread

We see a lot of threads asking for bench form critiques on this forum. I feel like most of these threads are made because people don’t know how to critique their own form. They just don’t know what to look for. I’m hoping to narrow that gap with this thread. I’m not going to touch on everything,...

Creative Farmers Walk Workouts

I love farmers walks; they're basically the only conditioning I do right now. But, I can get bored with them so I try to be creative at times. I have a Culligan water cooler with 5-gallon bottles that load into it. There's a grocery store with a water dispenser about a mile from my house. When...

Calling anyone interested in a friendly strength competition for this spring/summer

Last fall, a few of us took part in a competition/collaborative effort where we uploaded our lifts and challenged each other to greater progress. It was fun, and to the best of my knowledge all of us made improvements. My squat is finally out of pathetic territory but still needs a lot of work...

Push ups (callisthenic exercise)

A push-up is a common calisthenics exercise beginning from the prone position. By raising and lowering the body using the arms, push-ups exercise the pectoral muscles, triceps, and anterior deltoids, with ancillary benefits to the rest of the deltoids, serratus anterior, coracobrachialis and the...

Exercising outside

Does anyone else here really not care for the gym, and much prefer to exercise outside whenever possible? I always find the air in the gym to be more limited, since there are many people in a confined space breathing heavily. I love me a good workout running outside, doing dumbbells, etc.

Understanding the CNS: Local or Comprehensive?

Admittedly, this is something I know very little about, concretely, only being acquainted with the hearsay and bro-science. When "training the CNS" is spoken of, what does that mean exactly? Neural adaptations are local and specific to the individual muscles being trained and coordinated. This...

Are the big 3 necessary for optimal gains?

While one can certainly achieve hypertrophy with many different movements, sometimes fans of the big 3 barbell lifts will argue that these lifts are special compared to other movements (e.g. the back squat is inherently superior for hypertrophy compared to single leg training) Curious to see...

Injury risk from heavy pull-ups?

I love pull-ups and been doing them for probably 20+ years. I do pull-ups twice per week. Always medium width pronated grip. One day I go for 3x10 (currently with 1 plate) and one day I go heavy 3x3 (almost at 2 plates) with some back-off sets. My other back work is usually weighted inverted...

Question about chest press on Vertical Chest Machine please?

I've had several injuries and surgeries over the last 10 years of my life spread out over my entire body, and unfortunately my body isn't done with its affinity for surgeries yet either. I won't go into the list, but it's fairly lengthy. My days of free weights are done basically. My question is:...

When to know you've sufficiently exhausted a bicep?

Biceps seem to be one of those bottomless pit muscles that always seem to be ready for another set of 10 reps to failure after a few minutes. I've only been back into lifting since July and I have had bicep growth, but seemingly not in proportion to the rest. But when I do biceps, I usually go...

6’1 - 215 Pounds: Should I Cut? Bulk?

I’m 22 - Male I’m somewhat new to working out. I played D2 sports about 3 years ago so we had a trainer that put us through different lifts and nutrition… at that time I was about 175-180 and I looked fit. Anyways, it’s been a while since I’ve worked out and I haven’t focused on any sort of...

Importance of horizontal pull vs vertical pull

I sometimes see people here say rowing movements are more important than vertical pulling movements, and that one should dedicate more time to the former than the latter. Is this just with regards to shoulder health or are there other factors involved?

What's going on with my leg? (Can't Squat!)

Hi guys, When I bend my leg, there's this sort of pop that goes on on the outside of the knee - I think it's my IT band? This happens especially during squatting. It never used to happen, but I took a very long hiatus since covid started, and trying to get back into training my legs. Any idea...

My left triceps is significantly weaker than my right

I have been trying to close the gap for a year now. The disparity is huge. For example, I can do 22.5 lb. with the left arm on the Precor free weight shoulder press, but 40 lb. on the right. And when I sit sideways each way on the free weight chest press, I can do 7.5 lb. on the left arm, but 17.5...
