Returning to weight lifting after pec strain

Upper abs chest problem

Is it easier to gain muscle when lean or whilst carrying extra body fat

Im wondering if it would be easier to make muscle gains if i were lean, currently im 20% bodyfat or so strength gains arent that fast.
