Post Sticky Thread Sticky: Barbells - Everything you ever wanted to know

I don't think a thread like this exists for the barbell, so I wanted to start one. The Olympic barbell is one of the most important purchases one can make for their home gym. A barbell is the interface to the weight and although they may all look similar to an untrained eye, there are actually a...

Sticky Thread Sticky: The Cheapo Setup

Ok so let's go through the cheapest options for new equipment that you'd be willing to use for training. While we all dream of buying that custom built rig, or finding a solid piece of used commercial or vintage equipment to outfit your gym, many times we just want to buy something that's usable...

Sticky Thread Sticky: The Official Power Rack Thread - August 2010 version

This is a collaborative effort from the equipment forum members. The 2008 edition has a lot of broken links and rather than keep that one going we decided to start a new one. First let’s have a few definitions to clear up some confusion. Squat Stands: These are probably the most useless...

power rack and flat bench, or dumbbells first?

Is it better to get a power rack and flat bench first, or get adjustable dumbbells first? I understand it would be good to get both, but the budget does not allow getting all of that at the same time. Can spend around $600 per year. Currently I have one barbell and iron plates, and an old...

Haven't seen a proper Rep Fitness thread, so figured we could make one. I received the PowerSpeed bar in Manganese Phosphate earlier today as well as the 275lb set of equalizers. Impressed with both. The new power bar is DEFINITELY more aggressive than the first iteration. I really like the...

Falling backwards during squat fail

This vid got me thinking decent squat stands like Rogue S2 / SML-2 with spotter arms are completely useless when you fall backwards. Is this kind of fail very rare? Even his unbolted rack moved a bit when he dropped the bar. TqJu8rY4eps

Is 2x3 the way to go on a rack?

I'm debating between the Rogue SML-2 (3x3) and the S2 (2x3). The SML-2 is newer but I've heard the reduced 2" clearance from the 3x3 for re-racking the bar may be an issue. Any thoughts? Is 2x3 the way to go?

Which Rogue barbell for 1 bar only gym?

I prefer 28.5mm and only want the entire bar in silver. So I narrowed down to these 3 contenders for BB compound lifts (bench, back squat, DL, OHP, BB Row): 1) Echo Bar 2.0 $205 2) Castro Bar $275 3) Ohio Bar SS $350 I'll be maxing out at 3 plates. Am I wasting money by going for the...

Please don’t use heavy Lat Pulldown bars on Triceps Pushdown Machines!

Just a safety tip, I’ve noticed a lot of people using those heavy steel lat pulldown bars on the smaller cable machines meant for triceps pushdowns, curls, laterals, face pulls, and other smaller movements. These bars are only to be used on the lat pulldown machines, the cables on the smaller...

Is there one that’s better than the other ? I know lever the weight depending on where the loading horns are in relation to where you clip on can differ hugely and I was always under the impression that a cable such as west side athletic platform is a truer weight?
